Practical First-order Reliability Computations Using Spreadsheet
نویسندگان
چکیده
ABSRACT: A practical procedure for reliability analysis involving correlated nonnormals was described in Low & Tang (1997), using object-oriented constrained optimization in the ubiquitous spreadsheet platform. Numerical derivatives and iterative search for the design point were automatic. The objective of this paper is to further illustrate the 1997 procedure for two geotechnical problems with relatively complicated performance functions, namely the bearing capacity of a rectangular foundation with eccentric and inclined loadings, and the stability of an anchored retaining wall. The results are compared with Monte-Carlo simulations.

A content validity approach to creating an end-user computer skill assessment tool
Practical assessment instruments are commonly used in the workplace and educational environments to assess a person's level of digital literacy and end-user computer skill. However, it is often difficult to find statistical evidence of the actual validity of instruments being used. To ensure that the correct factors are being assessed for a particular purpose it is necessary to undertake some t...
متن کاملDeclarative Parallel Programming in Spreadsheet End-User Development A Literature Review
Spreadsheets are first-order functional languages and are widely used in research and industry as a tool to conveniently perform all kinds of computations. Because cells on a spreadsheet are immutable, there are possibilities for implicit parallelization of spreadsheet computations. In this literature study, we provide an overview of the publications on spreadsheet end-user programming and decl...
متن کامل1 Interval Computations on the Spreadsheet
This paper reviews work on using interval arithmetic as the basis for next generation spreadsheet programs capable of dealing with rounding errors, imprecise data, and numerical constraints. A series of ever more versatile computational models for spreadsheets are presented beginning from classical interval arithmetic and ending up with interval constraint satisfaction. In order to demonstrate ...
متن کاملUsing a structured design approach to reduce risks in end user spreadsheet development
Computations performed using end-user developed spreadsheets have resulted in serious errors and represent a major control risk to organizations. Literature suggests that factors contributing to spreadsheet errors include developer inexperience, poor design approaches, application types, problem complexity, time pressure, and presence or absence of review procedures. We explore the impact of us...
